Paychex employees lend a hand to The Chase Home

Recently, employees from Paychex, a provider of human resource, payroll, and benefits outsourcing services, held a Day of Caring at The Chase Home in Portsmouth. Founded in 1877, The Chase Home in Portsmouth provides prevention, early intervention, residential, and community-based programs to at-risk youth throughout New Hampshire.

As part of its Day of Caring, Paychex HR Sales Consultant Shane McDonough said their efforts consisted of weeding, mulching, tree-trimming, and staining picnic tables. “One member of my team also put together a bicycle for one of the kids,” he said. “Overall, it was a fun day, and it felt nice to do a little something for the kids.”

For McDonough, the day’s festivities were particularly meaningful, as he also serves on The Chase Home board of directors, which works in close partnership with leadership at the agency on a variety of interrelated matters. “We serve as sounding boards for the operation side of Chase Home, and we help with strategy and fundraising,” he said. “It was nice to get involved at Chase Home in a different way with this project.”

According to Meme Wheeler, executive director of The Chase Home, Day of Caring events like the one hosted by Paychex help the agency address critical needs for which funding is often scarce. “A lot of these needs concern our building, which is more than 100 years old, or landscaping,” she said. “These sorts of projects often emerge unexpectedly, so Day of Caring events are incredibly helpful.”

In looking to the future, Wheeler said the next short-term project consists of replacing its sign and repairing its brick entryway. “We have quotes, but we are working to figure out the funding side of it,” she added.
